Hallmark TV movie cheesy but not as hideous as Deal or No Deal

My TV reception is so cruddy I can only pick up two channels, 4 and 11.

WCCO's Project Energy series http://wcco.com/energy has gone a fair way toward redeeming TV news in my opinion. It's relevant, well-sourced and useful.

I can't say the same for many of the TV shows I'm able to pick up. I admit I enjoy all the blood, guts, cops and courts dramas, even though I know they're kind of trashy.

I hate reality TV. It makes me feel anxious and embarrassed for the participants.

I groan whenever that Deal or No Deal guy comes on. I'm not a gambler and if given 100 bucks I'd share, save and spend it -- not risk losing it all. I know I'm taking it too seriously, but if some guy's sweating and crying over the decision to accept or decline the deal, I want to introduce him to my financial advisor for some sound money advice.

The Amazing Race reflects poorly on Americans. I feel like some of the participants treat foreign countries, cultures and people as, no big surprise here, disposable items, to be used and then thrown away without a parting glance from the window seat of the airplane. What culture racers pick up is in tiny, easily digestible pieces. I was sickened by their visit to the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. Participants came away with such deep thoughts, as "Wow, it really makes you see what matters in life." Now let's get back to the race!

I guess that's why I ended up watching Hallmark Hall of Fame's Sunday night movie, "Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness."

It's based on a true story in which a teenager kills a mom and daughter in a car crash. The dad and sons want revenge. But that desire is more harmful than helpful. So they forgive the teen and start to speak to high schools about the dangers of wild driving.

Cheesy?
You bet.

Uplifting?
Absolutely.

TV as entertainment... isn't

TV as entertainment... isn't so entertaining any more. The television set serves as an alternative to radio so the dogs think somebody is talking to them. Have I become that cynical? Probably.

I enjoy The Amazing Race. Not for the reality TV value (I wonder how real it can be with the sixteen unseen camera people, grippers, directors, etc.). Rather, I enjoy the sheer value of seeing places I probably wouldn't otherwise see. Some of the countries and cities they visit won't be found in travel brochures or shows. For me, that's the shows only redeeming value.

"Deal or No Deal" is bad, but I saw one a couple of weeks ago that was completely pitiful: "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" with Jeff Foxworthy. Pitiful, because the two contestants I saw that night were NOT smarter than fifth graders... and one was a teacher!

The only show on TV I seem to enjoy is "House." Forget the dreamy ruggedness of Hugh Laurie. Fact is, if I contract some obscure, untreatable disease... I want a crotchety, poor-bedside-manner doctor with the knowledge that can make me better over the good-looking-nice one that tells me they aren't sure what it is.

The week of April 23-29 is actually TV Turnoff week. However, I did not participate because I'm addicted to Heroes...
Yes, I'm a geek.

I just saw a string of Heroes episodes and they were pretty cool. I'm a little confused about who the bads guys are though.

I generally avoid anything

I generally avoid anything to do with Hallmark Hall of Fame movies because when I think of them, I automatically get visions of the TV series "Touched by an Angel" in my head. The two have nothing to do with each other (that I know of), but the visions won't go away, so I don't fight the urge to keep my lunch, thank you very much. ;)

But you're so right about reality TV; I cringe a lot when I watch it as well. Two of the worst ones for me are (were? are they still on?) "The Bachelor" (how degradingly Bachelor-worshipping are these women?) and "Fear Factor." It seems that the participants on Fear Factor consistently have the chance to slip into stupid gender roles--the women wear bikinis for every stunt, say "the men better watch out, I'm going to win this thing!", then proceed to fail spectacularly. Meanwhile, the men swagger around, leer at the women in bikinis, and are just generally macho and muscly. And then everyone eat bugs. Great premise for a show, eh?

i don't know if this is the

i don't know if this is the right place to ask
but i would love to see hallmark tv show
the donna reed and ozzie and harriet shows.
i miss these show and am sick of
all the reality show that are on.

I'm with you on reality

I'm with you on reality shows. I won't even watch them for a minute. I know tons of people are huge fans of the singing and dancing talent shows but I just don't enjoy them. I'll take a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie any time over death-defying stunts and gross-out shows.
