It's good to leave the hermit shell

A friend I haven't seen for about a year made me lunch yesterday. Eating shrimp curry in her sunny house and visiting with her was such a treat. Between work and family it seems there's little time left for friendship. But it's so important.

Friends are the people with whom you get to be your unique adult self. They don't bug you about doing dishes or ask you to tie their shoes. (You've got a problem if they do.) Friends offer an outside perspective and encourage our dreams. They remind us of who we are separate from our roles as parent, spouse and worker bee.

Now that my husband is home on nights and weekends, thanks to a career change, I think I'll be making more forays into my friends' homes. If I manage to do the dishes I might even invite them over to my house!
