VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. Most of the companies in the US are going to this amazing product. It allows a phone conversation to take place over the Internet. Kind of snazzy, huh?

This technology uses a high speed Internet connection like T1 or cable modem to turn your voice into tiny little data packages. Those packages are condensed and delivered to a main computer that is located at the VOIP provider’s location.

From there the little data packages are converted back into your voice sounds.

Finally they are transmitted to the caller on the other end of the phone.

Seems like a lot of work just to get a conversation going.
But one of the great advantages of this technology is the cost savings it brings to consumers and business people.

Not so long ago businesses needed to have a dedicated line for every phone number they had in the office.

With VOIP the phone line can be cut down to just a single Internet connection and a VOIP box that can be programmed to each number in the office. And that means a cost savings because you’re not paying for all the lines that it took to get to your location.

A couple of VOIP providers you might of heard on the TV or radio are Vonage and Comcast, and even the big boys like Qwest, Sprint and Verizon are getting into the game.

This technology is advancing every year and soon almost all business lines will be using this technology. So when you call for technical support and hear a human’s voice, you will really be talking to a computer making the sound of a person speaking.
